Of course, Stucky created an immersive reading around his book. Standing in the center of a great church, we witnessed a transformative ritual take place. Surrounded by marigolds and a chalk-drawn sacred circle, Stucky recited his work into the candle-lit crowd of listeners.
Immersive Poetry FULL
His words, backed by original compositions by Mark Korven (of The VVitch), echoed into the room filled of incense and walls of bleeding sound. Stucky anointed himself and performed a ritual, inviting us to watch and feel the transformation. We sat on pews, all of us, in prayer to poetry, to the self, to the divinity of whatever was happening before us.
In that space, I witnessed again the nearly-holy power of poetry. I was reminded again of the pleasures of witnessing poetry in an intimate setting, in an environment fit for and respecting of the power of poetry, in a space where the audience is allowed to feel, weep, and connect.
An immersive event can be produced, sure, but it can also be done in your living room with friends. Perhaps you are already creating sacred poetic spaces without realizing it. How nourishing and how transformative does it feel?

Use VR to create interactive poetry experiences that allow the reader to actively engage with the poem in new ways. For example, a VR poem could allow the reader to rearrange the words of a poem to create their own unique interpretation, or interact with the virtual environment to uncover additional material related to the poem.
Explore the use of sensory inputs in VR poetry experiences. Poetry is often associated with the senses - think about the way poets use language to describe the taste, smell, and feel of things. VR technology could allow poets to create experiences that engage multiple senses and create a more fully immersive poetry experience.
Take advantage of the non-linear potential of VR experiences to create poetry experiences that allow for multiple readings and interpretations. Traditional poetry readings are often linear - the poem is presented in a specific order, and the reader experiences it from beginning to end. VR experiences, on the other hand, could allow for multiple pathways and choices, allowing the reader to explore and discover the poem in their own way.
His Are You There exhibit at SMUSH Gallery provides proof of point for this theory that poetry is highly malleable and ubiquitous. Poems can be understood when presented on a stage and on a page, but can also be brought into our lives in very non-traditional ways that look more like play than like an intellectual challenge.

Since the eighteenth century, freedom has served as one of the primary ends toward which political life is directed, and perhaps as a result freedom has come to be understood largely in political terms. In this course we will question this association of freedom and politics, both with an eye toward expanding the possible avenues through which freedom can be understood and enjoyed while also identifying the conditions under which freedom can be meaningfully lived in the political realm.
